The Problem
2022 VW ID.4 Pro S (41,500 miles) towed in after failing to charge at home and at multiple public Level 2 stations. Customer tested at three different EVSE units with same result — car connects but charging does not start. DC CCS fast charging session at Electrify America completed normally. P0D35 (Charging System Fault) confirmed via VCDS.
Diagnostic Procedure
-
1
1. Confirm P0D35 via VCDS. Additional code 0x934B52 in OBC module pointing to internal rectifier fault.
-
2
2. Verify DC charging path — initiate CCS session. Charges normally at 125kW. Confirms HV battery, BMS, HV contactors all functional.
-
3
3. AC charging path isolated to OBC. Measure AC input voltage at OBC connector during Level 2 attempt: 240V present. Measure DC output from OBC to HV bus: 0V. OBC not converting AC input.
-
4
4. Check OBC coolant flow. Coolant flowing, inlet temp 21°C — thermal shutdown not the cause.
-
5
5. Inspect OBC internal via resistance check on AC input terminals (power off, HV de-energized). One leg of the rectifier bridge shows open circuit — diode failure inside OBC.
-
6
6. Replace OBC assembly per VW MEB service procedure. Reprogram and code with VCDS.
-
7
7. Level 2 charging session at 11kW initiated immediately after replacement. Full 80% charge completed. P0D35 does not return.
Resolution & Root Cause
OBC assembly replaced and coded. AC charging fully restored at both 120V and 240V. DC fast charging unaffected throughout.
💡 Key Lesson
On VW ID.4, if DC CCS fast charging works but AC charging is completely dead, the OBC is the only component in the AC charging path that is not shared with DC. Code 0x934B52 alongside P0D35 specifically points to the OBC rectifier bridge. Don't waste time testing EVSE units or replacing 12V batteries — the split between AC-only failure and DC-normal is the diagnostic shortcut.
