VW ID.Buzz U0073 CAN bus chafed harness sliding door wiring

2024 VW ID.Buzz presented with multiple random ECU communication faults and intermittent loss of instrument cluster and ADAS functions. U0073, U0155, U0121 stored. Root cause: body harness chafed against sliding door lower track guide, intermittently shorting CAN High and CAN Low.

2024 VW ID.Buzz (11,300 miles) presented with intermittent instrument cluster blackout, loss of parking sensors, and random warning lights. Faults clear on restart but return within 1-2 driving cycles. U0073 (CAN Bus Off), U0155 (Lost Communication with Instrument Cluster), and U0121 (Lost Communication with ABS) stored across multiple modules.
  1. 1. Confirm fault codes — multiple U-codes across chassis and comfort CAN networks. All intermittent.
  2. 2. Inspect for aftermarket accessories or recent bodywork — none found.
  3. 3. Perform CAN network resistance check. CAN High to CAN Low on body CAN bus reads 47 ohms at rest — should be 60 ohms. Low resistance indicates partial short between the two lines.
  4. 4. Physically inspect harness routing from front to rear along the left side of the vehicle. Harness runs under the left sliding door lower guide rail.
  5. 5. Open and close sliding door slowly while monitoring CAN resistance. Resistance drops to 12 ohms at approximately 200mm open — short becomes more severe as door moves.
  6. 6. Remove door sill trim. Harness bundle visible pinched between door track guide bracket and floor pan. Two-inch section of outer insulation worn through by metal guide edge. CAN High wire insulation cracked, intermittent contact with CAN Low wire underneath.
  7. 7. Repair harness: re-route with 50mm additional slack, insulate damaged section, add protective split loom at contact point. Secure with correct P-clips.
  8. 8. Cycle sliding door 40 times. CAN resistance stable at 60 ohms throughout. All U-codes cleared, no return.
Harness re-routed and repaired at chafe point under left sliding door track. CAN bus stable, all communication faults resolved.
Multiple intermittent U-codes on VW ID.Buzz should trigger a physical harness inspection before any module replacement. The sliding door harness on early production 2024 units runs close to the lower guide bracket and is a known chafe point. A CAN bus resistance test pinpoints the short; door cycling while monitoring resistance isolates the location to the sliding door path.
